Why Tromsø's Winters Are Surprisingly Mild
When people look at a map, they expect Tromsø to be one of the coldest cities on Earth.
After all, it lies roughly 350 kilometers (220 miles) north of the Arctic Circle.
Yet winter temperatures often surprise visitors.
The Ocean Changes Everything
The reason begins thousands of kilometers away.
Warm water flows northward through the North Atlantic Current, which continues along Norway's coast as the Norwegian Current.
These currents transport enormous amounts of heat from the tropics toward northern Europe.
As the relatively warm ocean releases heat into the atmosphere, the surrounding air also becomes warmer.
Winds Carry the Warmth
Prevailing southwesterly winds pick up this milder ocean air and carry it across Norway's coastline.
Because Tromsø sits close to the sea, it benefits from this natural heating system throughout the winter.
The nearby ocean also changes temperature much more slowly than land.
It absorbs heat during the summer and gradually releases it throughout the colder months, helping prevent extreme temperature swings.
Milder Than You Might Expect
Winter temperatures in Tromsø often remain around −4°C to 1°C (25°F to 34°F).
While still cold and snowy, these temperatures are considerably milder than many inland locations at similar latitudes, where winter temperatures can fall below −30°C (−22°F).
Latitude Isn't the Whole Story
Climate depends on far more than distance from the equator.
Ocean currents, prevailing winds, elevation, and local geography all influence how warm or cold a place becomes.
Tromsø is a perfect example.
Despite being deep inside the Arctic, it enjoys one of the mildest climates found anywhere at its latitude.
Nature's Giant Heat Pump
Without the warm Atlantic currents, northern Norway would be dramatically colder.
Instead, the ocean continuously transports tropical heat northward, creating a climate that surprises millions of visitors every year.
